Rubbish! They’re back at it again

Student killed by chair thrown from above has not deterred some residents

-

KUALA LUMPUR: It has just been three weeks since a boy was killed by a falling chair, yet high-rise flat residents are back at throwing all kinds of rubbish from the balcony.

City Hall (DBKL) has installed safety netting to create a safer environment at the Seri Pantai People’s Housing Project (PPR) flats, but the nets are now littered with all kinds of rubbish.

A check by Bernama found that the types of garbage stuck on the netting mostly comprised food and beverage packs.

The residents appeared to have forgotten the unfortunate Jan 15 incident where 15-year-old student S. Sathiswaran was killed when an office chair hit his head.

Housewife Suzana Mohamad, 42, who has been staying at the PPR for 16 years, said the netting was good but not a permanent solution.

“Several years ago, my son was walking under the building and a large piece of wood fell on his head. He needed seven stitches.

We will look at its effectiveness before implementing the system at other PPRs. Wan Mohammad Ghazali Nor

“It was not only that, my elder sister’s head was also injured when a piece of glass fell from above. After all these incidents, we are scared to walk in the open area,”

said Suzana.

Another resident, Kamarudin Baba, 55, said he was scared to walk in the open area and would try to walk under the covered passages.

“I frequently see large rubbish being thrown from above, including glass windows. Fortunately, I was never hit.

“The residents must change their mentality,” he said.

The director of the Community Development and Urban Wellbeing Department of DBKL, Wan Mohammad Ghazali Nor, said the department would install safety netting at the PPRs to prevent accidents.

“For the moment, we only installed the netting at the Seri Pantai PPR. We will look at its effectiveness before implementing the system at other PPRs,” he said.
