Right system for smooth traffic

- S.H. HUANG Kuala Lumpur

SYNCHRONISED traffic lights system and equal time system will help to improve traffic flow. It will also be fair to all motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Match the traffic lights system with the number of vehicles on each side of the road. If there are more vehicles on one side of the road, then more time should be allotted to that side before the light turns red. In this way, that side of the road will be cleared faster.

However, if there is heavy traffic on all sides, then equal time is fair for all motorists.

One junction is at the Universiti Malaya Hospital in Petaling Jaya. Hardly three cars are able to turn into the hospital before the light turns red. In cases of emergency, a patient may die at that junction! In fact, more time should be given for motorists to go to the hospital, especially when lives are involved.

Another junction is at the Summit in USJ Subang Jaya. It is a nightmare travelling through that area where cars are piled up bumper to bumper every hour of the day.

Synchronise the traffic light sys- tem so that the road with the most cars could be cleared faster.

Of course, if all sides are jammed, then give each side three to five minutes. This would be fair to all. Nobody should rant and grumble as everybody would get the same amount of time.

Yes, those who beat traffic lights should be penalised with fines and/ or given demerit points. Suspend their driving licence for six months or more when they hit 15 points.

Australian motorists are well- mannered and respect pedestrians at zebra crossings. Let us bring civic consciousness to our people.

Punish road bullies severely by revoking their driving licences! We don’t need killers on the road.

Watch out for bus drivers who race their buses like F1 drivers, endangering the lives of other road users besides theirs. Take away their rice bowl.
