KUANTAN: There was early Chinese New Year cheer for residents of the Jabor Old Folks Home and 40 underprivileged families, who received ang pows and gifts.

A donor, who wished to remain anonymous, presented over RM5,000 worth of goods and ang pows to the recipients here on Wednesday.

Pertubuhan Komuniti Harap Kuantan chairman Yvonn Chan said the donor came to them seeking to help the poor, and the body suggested helping the home and the underprivileged families.

“The Jabor Old Folks Home is very old and the staff need funds to maintain the building.

“We came to know of the families through a church in Sri Kuantan, which offers free tuition and daycare to the underprivileged children of those families,” said Chan.

The home received RM3,000 worth of groceries and 25 mattresses, while the caretaker was given RM500.

The donor also gave RM1,000 in cash and five mattresses to a family with a child suffering from lymphoma.

Chan said each of the 40 families received ang pows of RM400 and a box of oranges.

Single mother of four, Lee Yoon Lin, 47, said she was grateful as her family could now prepare for the celebrations.

“I can buy new clothes for my sons. We can also travel to Ipoh to visit my family for Chinese New Year,” said Lee, who works from home as a hairdresser.

On Chap Goh Meh, Chan said, they would bring 20 underprivileged children to Kuantan Parade to celebrate the new year.
