JASIN: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is focusing on educating motorists during the ongoing Ops Selamat, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said issuing summonses to motorists was not the main aim of JPJ officers stationed at accidentprone stretches at the North-South Expressway and trunk roads throughout the country.

“JPJ’s intention is to save lives and reduce road accidents during the balik kampung exodus,” he said after opening MCA’s operations room in Bemban for the upcoming general election here yesterday.

Liow said the JPJ was hoping for a significant decline in road fatalities during the festive season.

“JPJ wants its presence to be felt and issuing summonses is not its main agenda although action will be initiated on traffic law violators," he said, adding that leaves of JPJ officers have been frozen during the operation period.

Meanwhile, Liow who is also MCA president, said the party has its own mechanism to identify suitable candidates who enjoy close rapport with the grassroots.

He said the identified candidates should also be a popular among Malaysians of all races.

“Today, we see many young MCA members attending the opening of this operations room.
