Three held over sale of firecrackers
KUALA LUMPUR: Three staff members of a hypermarket in Cheras were arrested by police after it was found to be selling firecrackers.
City police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Lazim said the three were nabbed at around 9.30pm on Friday during a check at the store following a tip-off.
The three, aged between 25 and 50, were a manager, a sales promoter and a storekeeper, he told reporters here yesterday.
Comm Mazlan urged the public not to buy or sell firecrackers during the Chinese New Year celebration.
He was speaking after the launch of the 12th Op Selamat, held in conjunction with the festive period for the Kuala Lumpur contingent at the Jalan Duta toll plaza.
Comm Mazlan said the number of accidents at last year’s Op Selamat went up by 203 cases (9.4%) to 2,351 cases compared with 2016.
“However, the number of fatalities went down by five cases. So, we are hoping to further bring down the number of accidents and fatalities this year,” he said.
He also advised the public to practise safe driving habits and be courteous while on the road.
“Be sure to lock up your houses securely and register with us if you are leaving town,” said Comm Mazlan, who also flagged off 52 Kawasaki Scrambler klx250 motorcycles.
The new motorcycles will be used for patrol duties during the holiday period to prevent snatch thefts and house break-ins.
