#UndiRosak speaker lodges police report
PETALING JAYA: Activist Maryam Lee (pic) has lodged a police report over threats and sexist remarks she received on social media following her involvement at a forum on the #UndiRosak campaign.
Maryam lodged the report at the Hulu Kelang police station yesterday.
“I was threatened and insulted by members of the public who do not agree with the views I raised during the forum.
“The insults I received are a serious issue, as they involve both sexual harassment and physical threats,” she said in the report.
After the forum on Jan 25, a Facebook user alleged Maryam was hired to promote the campaign as a ploy to help Barisan Nasional win in the coming general election.
His post started a flood of attacks on Maryam, with some users even superimposing images of her face on lewd photographs.
At the same time, a Bahasa Malaysia gossip site attacked Maryam and fellow panellist, activist Hafidz Baharom, with allegedly defamatory articles.
Shocked and upset, Maryam posted a video of the abusive comments on Jan 30, saying it was “heartbreaking” to become a victim of cyberbullying over a political disagreement.
The 26-year-old said while other #UndiRosak activists were also being attacked, she was bearing the brunt of it because she is female, young and single.
The #UndiRosak hashtag slogans that have spread on social media call on young voters to deliberately spoil their ballots purportedly because there is no difference between Barisan and Pakatan Harapan.
