IPOH: Five years ago on Valentine’s Day, Liew Koon Sing and Heow Ee Ling met for the first time after chatting online the day before.

The couple agreed to meet at The Lost World of Tambun theme park, and when they first laid eyes on each other, they knew it was love.

Liew, 27, recalled how Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year fell on the same day five years ago.

“I ‘met’ Heow on WeChat and when I saw her for the first time, I instantly fell for her,” said Liew who works as a machine operator in Singapore.

Heow, who also works as an operator at a different factory in the island-state, said their traditional wedding would probably take place next year.

They were among 12 couples who tied the knot in a joint ceremony at the Ipoh Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association Hall yesterday.

Another couple, Chai Charng Jie, 26, and Chai Yan Ni, 23, studied at the same primary and secondary school in Malim Nawar, but never spoke to each other until four years ago when a mutual friend introduced them.

Charng Jie said he knew Yan Ni’s brother, but never spoke to her before.

“Destiny has its own plans because when we were introduced four years back, there was instant chemistry between us,” said Charng Jie who works at a hotel in Switzerland.

After meeting him, Yan Ni also left for Switzerland to work at a hotel there.

Choong Jun Yeap, 26, and his wife Emiko Toh Li Yen, 27, met at their workplace.

Toh said she started working for Choong four years ago, and both of them fell in love.

“We had a Western-themed garden wedding reception on Feb 13, and officially tied the knot on Feb 14,” added Toh.

Choong, a businessman said that for the Chinese 13 meant “Yi Sheng” and 14 “Yi Shi”, which means “whole life together forever”.
