Silver whets Hakimi’s appetite for World Indoor C’ships

KUALA LUMPUR: National triple jumper Muhd Hakimi Ismail warmed up for the World Indoor Championsh­ips in Birmingham next month by garnering a silver in the pre-Asian Games Athletics Championsh­ips at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

The Perak athlete made a leap of 16.24m yesterday, which was way off his SEA Games record of 16.77m set in Kuala Lumpur last August.

China’s Zhu Yaming won the gold with a jump of 16.79m and the bronze went to India’s Kamalraj Kanagaraj, who managed 15.73m.

Hakimi said he was looking forward to making his debut in the World Indoor Athletics Championsh­ips from March 1-4 after his effort in Jakarta.

“I hope to do much better in Birmigham with the presence of world class athletes,” said Hakimi.

Malaysia also won one silver and two bronzes on the fourth and final day of competitio­n.

Yap Sean Yee finished second in the women’s high jump with a height of 1.78m.

Wang Yang of China took the gold by clearing 1.85m while Indonesia’s Nadia Anggraini settled for bronze with 1.70m.

Nineteen- year- old As i f Rahman Jiyaudeen clocked 1: 54.33 to win bronze in the men’s 800m.

India’s Jinson Johnson ( 1: 47.96) and Raed Aljadni of Saudi Arabia (1:54.17) took the gold and silver respective­ly.

The national men’s 4x100m quartet of Muhd Haiqal Hanafi, Abdul Wafiy Roslan, Badrul Hisyam Abdul Manap and Khairul Hafiz Jantan clocked 39.91 to bag the bronze.

Indonesia won the gold with a time of 39.07 while Sri Lanka bagged the silver in 39.71.

Malaysia ended the four-day meet with three golds, two silvers and four bronzes.
