SUBANG JAYA: The government plans to set up a national control centre for enforcement agencies to provide a better traffic management system for all roads across the country.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusoff said the control centre would allow enforcement agencies to monitor federal and highway roads which will be equipped with sensors and cameras.

It will be used to check on the vehicles, especially by the police, in cases of theft or kidnap. Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusoff

“In the long term, we believe the solution is to establish this control centre for the use of all ministries especially relevant agencies such as the police and the Road and Transport Department,” Fadillah told reporters in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration period traffic monitoring programme at Persada PLUS, yesterday.

He said the proposed centre was not aimed to punish road users.

“We will equip our roads with sensors and cameras, not to fine or punish road users but to ease traffic congestion and reduce road accidents.

“It will be used to check on vehicles, especially by the police, in cases of theft or kidnap,” he said, adding that it can be used by the agencies for collection of traffic management data.

Asked when the centre will be set up, Fadillah said he could not disclose the full details but in principle it has been approved by the Cabinet.

“We have tabled the idea to the Cabinet and it is in the midst of looking into the details that will require comments and response from all relevant agencies,” Fadillah said.

At the event, the minister said the traffic on the north and southbound has been smooth and in control on both ways in general.

In the south, there was a bit of traffic congestion in Skudai, Johor heading to Singapore.
