Fans express shock over Sridevi’s passing

PETALING JAYA: Local fans of India’s iconic actress Sridevi were shocked and heartbroken by the sudden news of her death.

“We have not heard of any news that she was ill. The news of her death came all of a sudden,” said Jaya Lingam, a 70-year-old housewife.

“My husband and I are very upset. We have been watching her movies for decades.

“She is a very versatile actress and worked her way to become a superstar.

“I loved her acting. The last movie I watched was English Vinglish. Her acting was superb.”

Another fan, Maya, a 29-year-old public relations executive, said the actress was “very talented”.

“I love her movies in the 1980s and her Tamil movies. I love Moondram Pirai, English Vinglish and Lamhe,” she said, adding that it was sad to hear of her passing.

Sridevi kicked off her acting career when she was just four years old, working in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films before going into Hindi films.

Sridevi won five Filmfare Awards and in 2013, the Indian government awarded her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour.

The 54-year-old actress died Saturday night in UAE of cardiac arrest. She was with her husband, producer Boney Kapoor, and daughter Khushi for her nephew’s wedding.

Saddened by the news, Lotus Five Star Cinemas (M) Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk R. Doraisingam Pillai said the group planned to show some of her films at its cinemas.

“Yes. We are discussing this as we have the distribution rights to some of her films.

“We hope to be able to show her films as soon as possible. Hopefully, in a week’s time,” he said.

However, Doraisingam said the company had yet to decide on the movies to be screened.

“It is a dark day for Bollywood. She was a good actress. Too young to be gone.

“She will be remembered for her simplicity, charisma, attitude and talent,” Doraisingam said, adding that her last movie screened was Mom, in July last year.
