Groom-to-be charged with gang robbery

KUALA LUMPUR: A finance manager was in court facing a charge of gang robbery, just three days before he was set to get married.

Low Lye Huat, 38, is accused together with eight men still at large of robbing hotel manager T. Daniel Raj, 34, and relieving him of two smartphone­s, a gold locket and RM2,500 in cash.

The losses were estimated at RM18,000.

The offence was allegedly committed in front of Scott Club, Scott Garden here at 5.15am on Dec 30, 2017.

Low was charged in the Sessions Court here yesterday under Section 395 of the Penal Code with gang robbery, read together with Section 34 of the same Code.

If convicted, he could be jailed up to 20 years and whipped.

Low, who was arrested on Jan 3, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out to him.

DPP Amira Sariaty Zainal did not offer bail.

Lawyer Jasmine Cheong asked the court to grant bail as her client was previously out on police bail.

“He works at a real estate agency and is the sole breadwinne­r in his family.

“He is getting married this Thursday, has no passport and there is no risk of him absconding,” Cheong said.

Judge Zaman Mohd Noor allowed bail at RM8,000 in one surety.
