Yeoh leaves parliamentary seat decision in party’s hands
PETALING JAYA: Selangor state assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh is willing to be moved to a parliamentary seat chosen for her by DAP.
“I will go wherever the party wants me to contest,” the Subang Jaya assemblyman said at a function here yesterday.
Although there is no indication where Yeoh will be standing, there is speculation that it is likely to be Segambut.
She was responding to questions over a Facebook post by DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang over the movements of DAP candidates for the general election.
Yeoh, who is from Subang Jaya, declined further comments.
In his post, Lim had indicated that Yeoh, a two-term assemblyman, would be fielded in a parliamentary seat.
“DAP will field more youths and women in parliamentary and state constituency seats and I look forward to Yeo Bee Yin and Hannah Yeoh as new DAP MPs in the new Parliament,” he wrote on Facebook on Saturday.
Last week, Damansara Utama assemblyman Yeo confirmed that she would be leaving to contest in Johor, believed to be the Bakri parliamentary seat.
There is talk that the seat vacated by Yeo will now see new blood from both MCA and DAP going head-to-head for the polls.
For DAP, two new names stand out in Petaling Jaya – councillors Lim Yi Wei and Jamaliah Jamaluddin, who, if chosen, will be first-time candidates.
MCA will most likely field Chan Kee Oi, who is currently the Damansara Utama MCA coordinator.
“We want to win the seat back but I believe we will have to work really hard for it.
“Seeing as the current competition will be vacating the seat, there are a lot of uncertainties,” said Petaling Jaya Utara MCA division deputy chairman Ch’ng Soo Chau.
