More jail time for Datuk Kabi’s brother

Imprisoned former lawyer gets another four years for cheating offence

-

KUALA LUMPUR: A former lawyer who is already serving jail time for cheating will spend more time behind bars for another cheating offence.

Datuk C. Anand Raja, 44, was slapped with a four-year jail term after pleading guilty to deceiving Mohd Yusof Abdul Manan, 60, into believing that he could settle the latter’s car loan.

Anand Raja made Mohd Yusof transfer RM7,630 into a bank account belonging to his wife, A. Premalatha.

The offence was committed at a Public Bank branch in Kajang at 10.40am on Aug 10, 2016.

Anand Raja is the younger brother of “Datuk Kabi” or C. Kamaleshwaran, 39, who has also been in the news for various allegations of cheating.

He was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment of between one and 10 years and whipping, as well as being liable for a fine.

In November last year, Bernama reported that Datuk Kabi was charged with 27 counts of cheating several individuals, allegedly offering discounts on Tenaga Nasional Bhd bill payments involving losses amounting to almost RM2mil.

Mitigating for a lenient sentence, Anand Raja told the court: “My guilty plea has saved the court’s time. I am the sole breadwinner in my family and have two children and parents to care for.”

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Khairiyah Samsudin pressed for a deterrent sentence, saying Anand Raja had committed a serious offence.

“He also has a previous conviction under the same Section 420 of the Penal Code,” she added.

Sessions Court judge Habibah Mohamed Yusof also fined Anand Raja RM3,000 in default three months’ jail.

Anand Raja is serving a three-year jail term at the Sungai Buloh prison.

My guilty plea has saved the court’s time. I am the sole breadwinner in my family and have two children and parents to care for. Datuk C. Anand Raja
