Er ‘not under pressure to make way’

Bakri MP wants a more suitable candidate to stand in his seat

KUALA LUMPUR: Bakri

MP Er Teck Hwa (pic) has denied he is being pressured by DAP into making way for fellow comrade Yeo Bee Yin to stand in his seat.

“I am not pressured by anyone. I want to make way for a more suitable candidate,” he said at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

The 45-year-old Opposition lawmaker said he would not contest in any other parliamentary or state seats either.

But the two-term MP said he would reconsider his decision if the party’s central leadership requested him to contest.

“I’m from Bakri, Muar, and I really like this place. So, I won’t contest in any other areas unless there’s a request,” he said.

Er also thanked DAP for giving him the opportunity to stand in Bakri.

“I hope voters in Bakri will give their full support to the next candidate chosen by the party,” he added.

Er said he would also lend a helping hand to Pakatan Harapan’s political campaigns.

Er first won the Bakri seat in the 2008 elections when he defeated MCA candidate Datuk Tay Puay Chuan by a 21,051-vote majority.

He also won in 2013 against MCA’s Lee Ching Yong with a bigger majority of 31,118 votes.

Last week, Yeo, the Damansara Utama assemblyman, said she would not defend her state seat. And, talk is rife that she will contest in Bakri.
