Consumers want strict enforcement

-

PETALING JAYA: Consumers want Bank Negara to strictly enforce the regulation against surcharges on purchases via credit and debit cards imposed by certain retailers.

Many are taking to cyberspace to reach out to the financial regulator.

“Bank Negara should formalise these regulations and make sure they are enforced,” said Facebook user Naren Selva.

“Imagine the amount of money retailers have made from these illegal ‘processing fees’.”

Facebook user Eng Bok Tan urged Bank Negara to have enforcement units punish those guilty of imposing surcharges.

Others recalled being charged an extra fee for paying with their credit card or debit card.

“I just got charged 3% by my car mechanic for using my credit card to purchase tyres! So this is not legal,” said another Facebook user, Jenny Tung.

Vincent M.Y. Tan said most travel agents imposed a charge on final payments, as did most outlets at electronics malls.

Many users also sought clarification on whether a minimal purchase amount for credit or debit cards was allowed.

“Some retailers don’t impose a surcharge, but they set a minimal purchase amount if you opt to use a credit or debit card. Is this allowed?” asked Facebook user Joanne Kow.
