SEREMBAN: As the general election looms, the Chinese are watching to see if the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) will be included in the Barisan Nasional manifesto.

While MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong did not give a definite answer, he reassured the Chinese that MCA always has UEC recognition on its mind.

“MCA never forgets the issue. The manifesto will be out in early April. Let’s wait and see,” he told reporters after launching the election operations room for the Rahang state seat here.

The UEC is a national exam managed by the United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia for Chinese private secondary schools.

Earlier, Dr Wee was quoted in a portal that MCA had put the recognition of UEC into the draft version of the manifesto, which would be announced on April 7.

In February last year, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had instructed the Education Ministry to conduct an in-depth study and evaluation of the UEC for its recognition at the national level.

Dr Wee said Barisan manifesto would be consistent in both Malay and Chinese versions.

“We will not have different versions like Pakatan Harapan. They were not consistent,” he said.

On seat allocation, Dr Wee said discussion was still on-going on possible swap with other Barisan component parties in Negri Sembilan.

“Mandate has been given to party president to discuss with other top leaders,” he said.

Later after launching the operations room for Temiang seat, Dr Wee applauded MCA Youth chief Datuk Chong Sin Woon for his diligence.

“He has been serving the people here and visiting them regularly,” he said.

Dr Wee added that Chong, who is also the Deputy Education Minister, knew it would not be an easy battle in Seremban.

“His mission is clear. He has a comprehensive plan on how to develop his hometown,” he said.
