80,000 cops on duty during elections

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 80,000 police personnel will be on duty for the general election, says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

“We will also reinforce this with 4,100 personnel from the Police Volunteer Reserve to cover any area where there is a shortage of police.

“We also have a separate reserve of personnel and will deploy them as we see fit, especially in areas where the redelineation process has increased the area of coverage for us,” he told reporters after launching the Police Department Level Excellence of Service Awards at Bukit Aman.

He said the country had already gone through 13 general elections.

“Our hope is that the people will use their right to vote and obey the law once Parliament is dissolved.

“We are satisfied with the preparations and our goal is to ensure everyone can come out safely to vote,” he said.

On an unrelated matter, Mohamad Fuzi said they were aware of the plans of certain groups to hold a gathering at Parliament today.

“In fact, we are aware that at least 30 people gathered outside the building today (Tuesday).

“We will take action against any- one who breaks the law.

“As of now no one has come forward to notify us about the gathering,” he told reporters after attending the PDRM Departmental Excellence of Service Awards Ceremony at Bukit Aman yesterday.

It is learnt that the protest on redelineation, which was supposed to be held in front of Parliament at 8am today, would instead be held at the National Monument.
