No extra seats for Kedah DAP

Members will continue to help despite setback, says party

ALOR SETAR: Kedah DAP has not been able to get two extra state seats to contest in the general election, said its chairman Tan Kok Yew.

The state DAP had lobbied to stand in the Gurun and Kulim seats but the requests were not “granted” by Pakatan Harapan.

“Our members are sad but we will abide by the top leadership’s decision.

“We will still help out during the campaigning period.

“We have contested in both seats before but we have never won,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Kedah DAP won Derga and Kota Darulaman state seats in the last election through Tan and Teoh Boon Kok respectively.

Both the Gurun and Kulim state seats are currently held by MCA’s Dr Leong Yong Kong and Chua Thiong Gee respectively, who defeated PKR candidates.

Tan also denied that the party was upset that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia would get to contest the most number of seats in the state.

Pribumi has been given 14 seats, followed by PKR and Parti Amanah Negara (10 seats each), and DAP (two).

On the redelineation motion passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday, Tan said the move had disrupted the party’s preparations for the general election.

“For my Derga constituency, two district polling centres were removed.

“For Kota Darulaman, an additional six district polling centres were added.

“We have to increase the number of our campaigning teams, so that they can go to the ground and help with campaigning in the new areas,” he said.
