PETALING JAYA: Hundreds of Christians attended mass at the Church of St Francis Xavier in Jalan Gasing here for Maundy Thursday, which commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples.

During the evening mass, Rev Father Alvin Ho and Rev Father Alberto Irenus SJ washed the feet of 12 members of the congregation, a ritual which re-enacts Jesus washing his disciples’ feet on the night before his crucifixion.

The mass began and ended with adoration serviceswhich was led by Father Alberto.

In his homily, he explained the washing of feet was not just a mere ritual, but rather a practice that combined all characteristics of a good Christian.

“This practice, and the day itself reminds us of the act of sacrifice and gratitude,” he said.

For Bryan Teoh, Maundy Thursday is a reminder to always be humble and brave.

“Jesus even lowered himself down to wash the feet of us sinful humans, and decided to go through crucifixion,” said the 23-year-old.

Also known as Holy Thursday, the day also marked the beginning of the Paschal Triduum, a three- day period recalling the passion, death, burial and resurrection of Christ.

After Good Friday today, Christians will mark Holy Saturday tomorrow followed by the Easter celebration on Sunday.
