DAP’s target – 11 parliament seats

MIRI: Sarawak DAP will be contesting 11 parliamentary seats this general election.

Besides defending the five urban seats that it won in 2013 – Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Sibu, Lanang and Sarikei – it will contest in six others currently held by component parties from Barisan Nasional. Those seats are Mas Gading, Serian, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu and Lawas.

Mukah, Kapit and Lawas are held by Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB), Serian by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) and Bintulu and Mas Gading by Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

State DAP deputy chairman Chiew Ching Sing (pic) said it had control over the five urban seats.

“We are confident of defending these seats and making inroads into a few more,” he said in an interview.

“We will be contesting in 11 parliamentary seats,” he added.

Chiew said DAP believed that the party had built up unshakeable support in the urban areas.

The Tanjong Batu assemblyman also said Sarawak DAP already had its list of candidates ready for the polls, adding that it was going on a statewide roadshow.

Chiew said DAP would make sure that it fielded strong candidates to win in its traditional constituencies.

“Our support base is steadily growing all the time,” he said.

Barisan has 25 seats in Sarawak. DAP has five and PKR has one.
