MBPJ to build pet crematorium due to lack of burial grounds

PETALING JAYA: A pet crematorium will soon be built by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) as there is not enough land for pet burial grounds here.

There is currently no such facility available here and the few privately owned pet memorial parks with crematoriums are located quite a distance away from the city.

“Being a modern city, we need a cost effective pet crematorium for the people. We already have existing crematoriums managed and run by us so a pet crematorium is the next logical addition,” said MBPJ councillor Sean Oon.

He pointed out cleaning contractors often find animal carcasses dumped in garbage bins or even discarded behind bushes.

MBPJ will have to collect and send them to an organic landfill.

“Most people do not know what to do with their pets when they die or even dead strays, so more often then not, it is just dumped somewhere,” he said.

He added that the cost to cremate a pet would be minimal at the MBPJ facility.

This will also help Paws Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) dispose off stray carcasses at their shelter more effectively.

MBPJ currently sends all strays it catches to PAWS, and last year alone, 991 cats and dogs were sent there.

The proposed crematorium, which would be built at the new PAWS shelter at Ara Damansara, on a plot of land along Jalan PJU1A/ 5, will be managed by PAWS.

However, discussions for the crematorium is still in its early stages and MBPJ has yet to consult with the Department of Environment (DoE) and the Fire and Rescue Department. Read the full story in StarMetro.
