PETALING JAYA: As a businessman leading a property development company, Tan Sri Lim Hock San knows very well that he has to master English and Chinese in order to excel in his industry.

The LBS Bina Group managing director said with China’s rise to becoming the world’s economic superpower, it is increasingly important to be proficient in both languages.

“Even the Chinese in China are now speaking very good English. They still believe that English is important.

“Of course our national language is important but in the current world, you need to master English and Chinese to equip yourself in the market,” he said after handing over a mock cheque for a sponsorship of The Star’s Step Up and Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) pullouts for SJK (C) Tun Tan Siew Sin where Lim is the board of governors chairman.

Star Media Group editor-in-chief Datuk Leanne Goh received the mock cheque during a ceremony at the school.

This is the seventh year LBS Bina Group is sponsoring schools to help students improve their command of English.

This year, the property development company is donating RM60,000 worth of Step Up and NiE pullouts to 76 schools in the Klang Valley, Pahang, Perak and Johor.

“I’m sure students in Chinese schools are able to master the Chinese language but ultimately, they still need English to commu- nicate with other parts of the world.

“The younger generation are the gems of our future and we hope to play our part to help them in their education by supporting the Step Up and NiE pullouts,” said Lim.

Lim said his father, Datuk Seri Lim Bock Seng, who is also chairman of LBS Bina Group, has always stressed that the company’s corporate social responsibility should focus on education.

Also present were Lim’s wife Puan Sri Karen Lim and the school’s senior assistant for co-curricular activities Lim Chye Hoon.

Endorsed by the Education Ministry, the NiE pullout is a resource for English language learning using real-world examples from the newspaper, while the Step Up programme is a 24-page bilingual pullout for primary school pupils.

The NiE pullout consists of 33 issues and is published every Wednesday. The Step Up pullout consists of 17 issues per year. The pullouts feature syllabus-based content that tackles themes set by the Education Ministry.
