‘Stolen car’ scam syndicate busted after leader’s arrest

-

KUALA LUMPUR: For two years, a 34-year-old man here persuaded car owners with car loan problems to report their vehicles stolen.

With his networks in the police, Road Transport Department and claims adjusters, he would then get insurance payouts for the cars, raking up at least RM2.9mil in losses.

He would then reregister these “stolen vehicles” and sell them off.

However, Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Mansor said police were on to his game when an OCPD noticed the false reports.

“We received a report from the Gombak CID chief on March 14 after he and the Gombak OCPD suspected something amiss, which then kicked off the investigation.

“Shortly after, we nabbed the 34- year- old contractor from Kampung Baru Subang,” he told reporters at the Gombak police headquarters here yesterday.

“We also arrested a 30-year-old man from Sungai Buloh believed to be the suspect’s right-hand man.

“The syndicate comprised eight others, including an Indonesian and three Pakistanis.”

Police, said Comm Mazlan, also seized 36 vehicles and 12 vehicle registration documents.

“Two inspectors, five sergeants and a corporal were also suspected to be part of the syndicate,” he added.

Those with information should contact the police hotline at 03-2052 9999 or visit the nearest station.
