Women’s triples crash out of quarter-finals

-

THE Malaysian women’s triples were dealt a cruel blow when they crashed out in the quarter-finals.

Ayuni Fathiah Kamis,

Nur Fidrah Noh and

Azlina Arshad were the favourites to win after having defeated Scotland’s Kay Moran, Stacey McDougall and Caroline Brown 17-10 in the Group C match on Tuesday.

But yesterday, they could not reproduce the same form against the same Scottish triples team at the Broadbeach Lawn Bowls Centre.

Malaysia had the psychological advantage when they were leading 15-14 but they fizzled out in the last game and lost 17-15.

Nur Fidrah was heartbroken over their loss. “We blew it for being overconfident. It is really frustrating that we failed to deliver when it mattered most,” said Nur Fidrah.

But there was good news when Malaysian women’s pair Emma Firyana Saroji and Siti Zalina Ahmad qualified for the quarter-finals after topping Group C with four wins.

The duo disposed of Botswana’s Lephai Modutlwa and Nelly Senna 29-7 before getting the better of Scotland’s Lesley Doig and Claire Johnston 18-11 to register their fourth win in the group.

Emma and Siti will face Group A runners-up India’s Lovely Choubey and Rupa Rani Tirkey for a place in the semi-finals today.

The Malaysian men’s fours of Muhd Syamil Syazwan Ramli, Zulhilmie Redzuan, Muhd Hizlee Abdul Rais and Fairul Izwan Abdul Muin staved off a strong challenge from Namibia’s Carel Olivier, Graham Snyman, Douw Calitz and Willem Esterhuizen before prevailing 14-11 in Group C.
