Soon Huat-Shevon out to end Indian pair’s hot streak

-

SHUTTLERS Goh Soon HuatShevon Lai Jemie are out to pour cold water on the hot run of India’s Satwik RankireddyAshwini Ponnappa of India.

The Indians have beaten two Malaysian pairs over the last six months since they were teamed up.

On Monday, Satwik-Ashwini pulled off an upset win over Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying that led to Malaysia’s 3-1 downfall in the mixed team final.

The Indians have also beaten Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing at the Indian Open in January.

“We don’t want to be their third Malaysian victim,” said Shevon.

In fact, Shevon and Soon Huat are determined to make up for the disappointing loss of their teammates.

Soon Huat-Shevon and SatwikAshwini are expected to cross paths in the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles competition at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre.

Yesterday, Soon Huat-Shevon reached the third round with a 21-6, 21-12 win over Ciaran Chambers-Sinead Chambers of Northern Ireland while SatwikAshwini defeated England’s Ben Lane-Jessica Pugh 21-17, 21-16 in the second round yesterday.

“Soon Huat and I only played once in the team event against Canada in the group tie. We’re slowly finding our momentum here,” said Shevon.

“We’ll surely be out for revenge for our teammates if we are to meet the Indians. We’ll be well prepared,” added Shevon.

Shevon and Soon Huat are also playing in the women and men’s doubles.

Shevon reached the women’s doubles third round with Soniia Cheah with a 21-8, 21-4 win over Ghana’s Grace Atipaka-Gifty Mensah yesterday while Soon Huat-Peng Soon will take on Chris Adcock-Ben Lane of England in the second round today.
