AMPANG: Residents of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Pusat Jagaan Sri Mesra Ampang can now look forward to more outings – thanks to Star Foundation.

The foundation has contributed four wheelchairs that were sorely needed by the residents, some of whom – at age 60 and above – are unable to walk properly. Currently, the home has 10 wheelchairs.

“They tire easily if they walk too far. With more wheelchairs, we can take them out more – as they really look forward to going out – as well as for hospital appointments,” home co-founder and nurse Faezah Ali

“These wheelchairs are also lighter and can easily be carried around,” she said.

Faezah said the centre, which began in 2013, was more than just an old folks’ home, adding that it believed in making its residents feel comfortable and loved.

“We want to improve their quality of life. We also have university students who volunteer here and we teach them how to take care of the residents,” she added.

Star Foundation trustee Datuk Tan Chong Seng, who presented the wheelchairs to the home, said helping the less fortunate and needy had always been its main objective.

“Not many will look after this group of people. We want them to be part of society and not be left out,” he said.

Set up in 2004, the foundation, the charitable arm of Star Media Group, aims to raise, receive and administer funds for various causes to help charitable organisations with their operating expenses.

The Medical Fund Programme was set up in 2015 to reach out to more individuals and families in need of financial assistance and urgent medical care.

Ampang MCA chief Datuk Low Kim Mang, who was also present, said the contribution was a good move and a job well done.

“Although everyone is busy and gearing up for the general election, programmes like these still need to be carried out as there are many elderly people who need wheelchairs.

“I also encourage other companies to come forward, contribute and give back to society,” he said.
