Last chance for Suryani to gun down medal in Gold Coast

-

NATIONAL woman rifle shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi (pic) will get a last shot at maintaining her status as Malaysia’s most consistent medal winner at the Commonwealth Games.

Her reputation is fast fading after she failed to come good in her second event – the women’s 50m rifle prone event yesterday.

The mother of two suffered a heartbreak when she finished seventh with a total score of 613.9 points at the Belmont Shooting Centre.

Singapore’s Lindsay Martina Veloso broke the Games record by amassing 621.0 points to win the gold.

Her effort erased the previous record of 620.7 set by Sally Johnston of Scotland in Glasgow in 2014.

Tejaswini Sawant of India took the silver with a score of 618.9 points while the bronze went to Seonaid Mcintosh of Scotland with 618.1 points.

Suryani also missed the mark on Monday when she failed to qualify for the 10m air rifle final after finishing 11th.

The Olympian will compete in her third and last rifle event – the 50m rifle three position today.

The 35-year-old, who has won med- als in the past three Commonwealth Games since Melbourne in 2006, said she would go all out to deliver a medal.

“The pressure is on me to keep my status intact. I’ve always delivered a medal and I want to keep it up,” said Suryani, who bagged a silver in the 50m prone event at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

Veteran shooter Hasli Izwan Amir Hassan finished sixth in the first round of qualifying in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol.

The 41-year-old shooter from Perak will compete in the second round today and is keeping his fingers crossed to reach the final.
