THE fourth Malaysian Indian Golf Association annual championship – the MIGA masters - proved a big hit with a full field of 124 golfers, drawn from several golfing guilds and some participants from neighbouring Singapore.

The event staged at Sungai Long Golf & Country Club in Kajang, Selangor, featured traditional Indian festivity decorations such as thoranam, valai maram and kolam, as the participants arrived to the sounds of the nadaswaram.

Taking advantage of benign afternoon conditions, some good golf was played and which was followed by post-round cocktails and an Indian dinner presentation.

From the fairways and greens, Mathan Raman emerged as the overall champion after carding a gross score of seven-over 79.

The A Medal champion was A.V. Shashi, who shot a nett 70, while the B Medal honours went to Vinod Varakrishnan. He won with a 72 on countback.

Sohniya Chandra Mohan was crowned the junior chanmpion with a score of 85.

Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony-cum-dinner, organising committee chairman S.P. Maniam said that besides enjoying good camaraderie and friendship among its members, the association was looking at ways to help improve junior Indian golfers through a few programmes which were in the pipeline.

“We are witnessing a growing number of Indian youths taking up the game of golf and our association feels that we can play a more meaningful role in developing their talents.

“As a start, we featured a junior category in this year’s MIGA Masters. With this, we urge our members and affiliates to lend their expertise and support for our fund-raising initiatives to help realise these goals,” he added.

The MIGA Masters this year was supported by Park Safe, Premela Constructions, Pembinaan Seri Handalan, APP Global, E-Appachi, FW Grays Security, Naidu Logistics, Sri Matrix, Carlsberg, Titoni, the ClubHouse and Astro.

MIGA is a registered body with the Sports Commissioner of Malaysia and has nine state affiliates.
