Tragedy averted, thanks to LRT emergency stop system

-

KUALA LUMPUR: A pregnant woman who fell onto the tracks at the Damai LRT station was saved thanks to the Platform Intrusion Emergency Stop (PIES) system installed at above-ground stations on the Kelana Jaya line.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd CEO Khairani Mohamed said that during the 7.48am incident yesterday, the 26-year-old woman fainted and fell onto the tracks as a train was reaching the platform.

“The PIES system automatically stopped the train when it detected an intrusion on the tracks.

“Prasarana auxiliary police personnel and the station’s operations officer then ordered all passengers to vacate the platform to facilitate rescue,” he said in a statement.

A Fire and Rescue Department team and medical personnel reached the scene soon after the incident, and took about seven minutes to get the woman to safety, Khairani said.

“She was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment, accompanied by a RapidKL officer.

“The Kelana Jaya LRT line resumed operations at 8.15am following a 25-minute delay,” he said.

The PIES system stops the electri- cal flow to the train system if there is an impact of more than 7kg on the platform.

“The system is installed at all platforms throughout the Kelana Jaya line except at underground stations.

“We are in the midst of installing the system on the Ampang and Sri Petaling lines, and expect it to be concluded at the end of this year,” said Khairani.
