KAMPAR: MCA candidates here have vouched to give their opponents a good fight in the elections.

Spearheading the team is MCA vice-president Datuk Lee Chee Leong, who will stand in the Kampar parliamentary seat, while Chang Gwo Chyang and Daniel Wa are entrusted to wrest back the Malim Nawar and Keranji state seats respectively from DAP.

All three candidates took to the stage and shared their visions for developing the constituency in many areas during a ceramah last night.

Backed by a large and supportive crowd, Wa spoke on MCA’s new hopes before he thundered out: “If we win, it means that the skies have cleared for Kampar and change is on the way.”

He drew similarity to the weath- er, as it rained heavily throughout the evening before clearing up.

In the last elections, Wa was one of the youngest candidates to be fielded, but he lost.

Now at the age of 30, the boyishlooking candidate urged the crowd to give him an opportunity to serve for the next five years.

“This is my second attempt. I hope Kampar voters will support us come May 9,” he said to loud applause.

As part of his vision, Wa said he would strive to resolve Bandar Baru Kampar’s longstanding flood woes.

According to Lee, Kampar’s poten- tial remained largely untapped.

While lauding Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s role in boosting the local economy, he said Kampar had much more to offer such as eco-tourism activities.

“Many people may not know that there is a significant portion of land that has been gazetted as a bird sanctuary (Kinta Nature Park). We should tap into this,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chang said a lot could be achieved together, but everyone must work and support each other.

“We are locals. Both Wa and I live here, so the people can look for us any time to solve their woes,” he said.

He also took a swipe at the Opposition, saying they did not believe in scolding people with vulgarities as it gave the Chinese a bad image.

Chang was referring to former DAP member Hew Kuan Yau, or Superman, known for his foulmouthed tirades.

Other speakers were state MCA chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, Wanita MCA chief Datuk Heng Seai Kie, Penang MCA chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng and VTAR Institute chief executive officer Tan Cheng Liang.
