Talk about mental health to dispel the stigma

-

AN attempted suicide has made the headlines again, “Drama in choppy waters as patrolman’s quick wit saves woman” ( The Star, April 19). According to initial reports, one of the leading reasons for the woman’s desperate act was issues related to mental health. Thankfully, the person in this recent case was saved, unlike in other recent reports on similar attempts from height.

It has been reported that 29.2% of Malaysians have mental health problems now. This is of great concern to those of us who are involved with the care of these people and for the country as well.

Of particular concern is access to care which, despite its availability, is often not used to full effect due to lack of understanding on how to access them.

It could also be due to the high level of stigma against mental illness, resulting in those needing it not daring to come forward for fear of reprisal and ridicule. You only need to read the comments hurled at the brave patrolman by netizens to appreciate this, “Believe it or not: Online attacks against hero auxiliary cop” (TheStarOnline, April 19).

This attitude needs to change – now. We would like you all to join us in supporting people struggling with mental health issues through hashtag #mentalhealthMY. Let’s make our voices heard and start talking more about mental health and #endthestigma!
