Thinking out of the box in Bakri and Bentayan

-

BAKRI: MCA is taking an “out of the box” approach in its attempt to wrest the Bakri parliamentary and Bentayan state seats, which have been held by the Opposition for the last decade.

MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai felt that a different strategy and approach was needed to win the seats in GE14.

“We need to think out of the box as we lost in the previous two elections.

“Despite this, we continued to serve the local communities and did not abandon them,” he told reporters at the Bakri MCA Unity Dinner last night. Dr Wee said their current strategy was to select and field candidates not from the local MCA divisional leadership.

“We believe candidate Koh Chon Chai can make a difference here as he has vast experience in issues related to the local industries and is able to transform them,” he added.

Koh, 51, was selected to contest the Bakri parliamentary seat.

Koh is Haji Jaib MCA branch honorary secretary and a well-known figure in the furniture industry.

Jalan Abdullah MCA branch chief Lee Kim Heng, 50, a local councillor, was chosen to contest the Bentayan state seat.

Dr Wee said Koh and Lee were both locals and were familiar faces with the communities here.

He added that their candidacy had received support from divisional leaders.

Also present was MCA Youth deputy chief Lee Ching Yong, who contested the Bakri seat in 2013.
