Villagers haul in 100kg of fish

-

KOTA KINABALU: Villagers from Kampung Lasau Tintapon in Kota Belud hauled in 100kg of fish from Sungai Lasau after a ban on fishing was lifted for just one day on April 20.

The restriction on fishing and other activities called “tagal”, in the local language, was imposed three years ago in an effort to conserve the river’s resources.

The “tagal” committee decided to allow villagers, who had registered and paid, to fish as much as they can.

More than 80 villagers turned up for the 8am to 2pm event.

The river will be reopened for fishing next year but the date has yet to be set.
