Instil road safety habit in children

- THOMAS FOO Subang Jaya

LIVING near a primary school, I have noticed that many pupils do not know the proper way to cross the road or the basics of road safety.

Many simply dash across the road without looking right, left and right again for motor vehicles.

A few days ago, a boy was nearly knocked down by a motorcyclist. Fortunately, the motorcyclist was not speeding and managed to avoid hitting the boy. But he almost knocked down another boy who had just crossed the road.

When I was in primary school in the 50s, the teachers would constantly remind pupils to look right, left and then right again and make sure there was no car on the road before attempting to cross.

We were also taught to cross behind a vehicle instead of in front of it. This practice became a habit for me and I have maintained it till now.

We have to instil road safety habits in our children to protect them.

Road safety habits must also be instilled among students who drive cars or ride motorcycles to school or college.
