MALAYSIAN ATHLETE FAILS PRE-GAMES DOPE TEST

-

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia may lose a medal from the recent Gold Coast Commonwealth Games due to a doping violation.

Although the name of the athlete or the sport involved has not been announced, it is believed that the national athlete bagged a bronze medal in Gold Coast.

Malaysia’s chef-de-mission for the Games Huang Ying How confirmed that an athlete failed a dope test.

“The athlete was tested before leaving for Gold Coast but the result only came out towards the end of the Games,” said Ying How.

“I believe the Malaysian Anti Doping Agency (Adamas) did their job well with the pre-screening.”

However, Ying How declined to elaborate further on the details.

“It is not up to me to reveal which sport is involved. The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) should be releasing a statement soon,” he added.

The detection of a failed dope test certainly ruined Malaysia’s hopes of a dope-free Games.

Malaysia won seven golds, five silvers and 12 bronzes in Gold Coast.

At the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games last year, diver Wendy Ng tested positive for sibutramine and was eventually banned for eight months.

Other major dope offenders during major events include badminton star Lee Chong Wei and wushu exponent Tai Cheau Xian.
