World amateur event underway
Malaysia will host the global final in Johor later this year
FOR the second consecutive year Malaysia will host the World Amateur Golfers Championship’s global final when the event is staged in Johor from Oct 20 to 28.
The world final will take place on four tracts at two golf clubs - the Ocean & Valley courses at Els Club Desaru Coast and the Allamanda and Cempaka at Palm Resort Golf & Country.
About 500 players from 45 countries, accompanied by families and friends, are expected at the 24th edition of the World Amateur Golfers Championship, presented by Perodua – the tournament’s title sponsor.
This will be seventh year that Perodua weighs in with its support, under the guidance of its chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin.
For its part, Malaysia will have 12 qualifying rounds scattered around the country, with the first two already played at Tiara Melaka Golf & Country Club and TPC Kuala Lumpur.
Delta Trend Golf & Leisure Holidays are the promoters of the tournament and will organise the national and world final, which will both take place in Johor on 17 Sept and in October, respectively.
Commenting on the event, Delta Trend managing director Isac Saminathan said: “It is an honour to be able to host such a huge tournament again, more so after last year’s success in Kuala Lumpur.
“And for this, we are most grateful for the support received from our sponsors Perodua, A.Sani & Associates, TA Group, Bank
Muamalat, Zurich, Srixon Golf, the Clubhouse, Southern Lion, COWA, Deligateaux, Zuellig Pharma, Sharp, Kemudi Usaha, Toffco, Carlsberg & Brunsfield.
“We recognise the event’s potential as a platform to bring together amateur golfers from around the world to explore Malaysia as a destination for golf and sheer fun”.
The tournament certainly fits the bill of Tourism Malaysia’s efforts to reach out to groups with unique interests and elevates the local tourism industry, while also attracting investment on several fronts.
“Among others, a huge thank you goes to the Malaysian Golf Association, Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Youth & Sports for
their support and the endeavor in making the championship an exciting and successful one,” added Saminathan.
“For more than a decade now the World Amateur Golfers Championship has inspired players from all walks of life all over the world to take up the challenge and compete within their own skill levels .”
