GEORGE TOWN: A businessman, who is an ardent fan of Manchester United football team, has set up a Malaysian United Party. And he is using the abbreviation MU in its party flags.

Tan Gin Theam, 49, who is party president and an MU fan for the last 25 years, said he admires the fighting spirit of his favourite English Premier League team.

And, to prove his fighting prowess he is contesting the Air Putih state seat against Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and three others.

The party is contesting in 20 state seats and five parliamentary seats in Penang for the first time.

“I chose to contest in Air Putih to show that I am not afraid of Lim or anyone else. Besides that, I am also contesting the Bukit Bendera parliamentary seat,” he said.

Tan said the party’s candidates must have the fighting spirit like Manchester United.

“They must work hard for victory. The candidates are using their own funds. I don’t have money to give them,” he said.

He said the party was registered on Dec 2, 2016.

Tan said that while he might have a slim chance of victory in Air Putih and Bukit Bendera, he would still campaign vigorously.

Asked about how the party’s candidates would fare, he quipped: “Ask me on May 9 at about 7pm.”
