PLUS: No road works at Causeway on polling day

-

JOHOR BARU: There will not be any road works at both the land crossings between Malaysia and Singapore on polling day.

There would be a temporary halt to all such works at the Causeway and Second Link in Tuas between May 5 and 13, said PLUS Expressways Bhd in a statement.

A spokesman from the concessionaire was responding to a photo that went viral, claiming that major roadworks were ongoing at the Causeway; and that these might deter Malaysians working in Singapore to return on May 9 to cast their votes.

“That photo must have been an earlier shot because by last Friday, the section of that road had been resurfaced,” he said.

He added that the Causeway saw heavy traffic daily and as such, it had to undergo repair and maintenance works often.

“There was structural repair work that required us to dig 200mm to 300mm,” the spokesman said.

He said the estimated onemonth repair works would continue after May 13.

“But if there is any urgent repair, we would have no choice but to fix it on the spot despite the temporary freeze to ensure the safety of motorists,” he said.

He added that the heavy machinery used for the roadworks was left near the Causeway, but without obstructing traffic.

“It is a very big machine which is not easy to transport around. That is why we are keeping it there so that after May 13, work can begin and end faster.”

He urged all parties to not politicise the matter and spread fake news.

It is estimated that some 300,000 Malaysians travel to Singapore daily for work.
