Daim: I am not concerned that Umno sacked me

-

MUAR: Former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin is unperturbed by his sacking from Umno as leaders of his former party support the stern action against any member who criticises it.

“I heard that I have been sacked from Umno,” he said, adding that he was not concerned when addressing a ceramah in Parit Yusof here yesterday.

When met later, Daim said he decided to campaign for Pakatan Harapan after PKR candidates Tian Chua and Dr Streram Sinnasamy were told that they were ineligible to contest.

Earlier, on Friday night, Daim attended a Pakatan ceramah in Bukit Katil, Melaka, with coalition chairman and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as well as another former Umno min- ister, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz.

Daim said he came to know about his sacking from news reports.

Sinar Harian reported Daim as saying that Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had “no powers to sack” anyone.

Rafidah, who was also sacked yesterday, said she had been in Umno for half a century, but the party had changed from the time when she was with it.

“I am not a card-carrying member of any party, but I support the cause of Pakatan,” she said during a ceramah at Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur in support of DAP’s Segambut candidate Hannah Yeoh.

Meanwhile, in Bagan Datuk, Perak, Bernama reported Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as saying that stern action would be taken against Umno members who criticised, slammed and turned their backs on the party.

Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said there should be discipline in the party.

“These individuals have switched sides due to their personal agenda,” she said at a press conference after an event in Bagan Datuk.

Shahrizat said the movement was disappointed with Rafidah, a former Wanita chief, who once stressed on party loyalty over personal interests.

On Twitter, Umno treasurer Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said it was normal in any party anywhere in the world for a member or leader who worked against their own party to get sacked for breaching party rules.
