NEW OCM PRESIDENT NORZA CALLS NEW LINE-UP HIS DREAM TEAM
Norza stresses harmony and team work in OCM line-up of old and new
KUALA LUMPUR: New Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria has underlined harmony and teamwork as the key after the 37th Annual General Assembly.
Norza said the new OCM leadership line-up for the 2018-2021 term, with a combination of new faces and old ones, are his “dream team” and expects his team to work immediately to prepare for the Indonesia Asian Games from Aug 18-Sept 2.
“I firmly believe that this is the ‘ dream team’ that I have been talking about. I want a harmonious team with no individuals bigger than the team itself,” said Norza, who won uncontested in a press conference in Wisma OCM yesterday.
“We will need to work immediately for the Asian Games, which is just around the corner. We will have to come up with a blueprint by taking into account the views of national sports associations and other important sides in helping our national athletes achieve success as well as winning our country’s first Olympic gold medal.”
The OCM election sprung surprises with National Sports Institute (NSI) chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi defeating the favourite – Malaysian National Silat Federation (Pesaka) secretary-general Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin – for the deputy president’s post. Azim garnered 54 votes against 43 polled by his opponent.
Incumbent OCM secretary-general Datuk Low Beng Choo lost by the narrowest of mar-
gins, by only one vote to Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin Mohd Najib, who took over after earning 49 votes.
The race for the vice-presidents’ posts saw three incumbents successfully defending their posts with Datuk Dr Zakaria Ahmad, Datuk Paduka Mumtaz Begum Abdul Jaffar and Datuk Ong Poh Eng returning for another term.
The two new vice-presidents are Datuk Shamala Subramaniam and Mahinda Vallipuram.
Table Tennis Association Malaysia (TTAM) honorary secretary Chan Foong Keong won the male assistant secretary position unopposed replacing incumbent Datuk Sieh Kok Chi, who has decided not to seek another term. Incumbent Moira Tan won unopposed for the female assistant secretary position.
Ahmad Feisal Ahmad Tajuddin retained the honorary treasurer position unchallenged but vice-president of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation ( MNCF) Datuk Amarjit Singh garnered 59 votes to beat Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) president Datuk Chong Kim Fatt, who got 37 votes.
