Contenders out to keep momentum going till polls
IPOH: Candidates from both Perak Barisan Nasional and the Opposition are intensifying their campaigning in a bid to meet as many people as possible.
Many are staying in their respective constituencies for maximum coverage.
Perak MCA chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, who is contesting the Tanjung Malim parliamentary seat, said he would have more meetthepeople sessions, singing contestscumceramah and visits to district polling centres.
A check of his schedule showed he had 12 programmes yesterday.
Dr Mah said everything was going smoothly and “I want to keep the momentum going”.
He will face PKR’s Chang Lih Kang and PAS’ Mohd Tarmizi Ab Rahman.
DAP’s Ipoh Timur parliamentary candidate Wong Kah Woh said he would stay in his constituency and reach out to more voters there.
“We want more people to come out to vote,” said Wong, who is going up against MCA’s Kathleen Wong Mei Yin.
As for Barisan’s Ipoh Barat parliamentary candidate Dr Cheng Wei Yee, he said his team needed to ensure that its election machinery had enough polling and counting agents for polling day.
Dr Cheng, who is facing incumbent M. Kulasegaran of DAP, said his team had already done all it could during the campaign and would now focus on its election machinery.
“All component party members need to be together and ensure that their respective party members come out and vote,” he added.
When contacted, Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s (PSM) Sungai Siput par liamentary candidate Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj said time was running out for him to make as many voters as possible aware of the situation in the constituency.
“With PAS and PKR in the fray, the votes here will be split badly.
“The perception on the ground now is that a candidate is either with Barisan or against them.
“This could be a bane for us as some voters who do not comprehend the situation see me and my party as Barisanfriendly,” he said.
He said some voters had also questioned PSM’s stance in not accepting the conditions set for it to contest under PKR’s logo.
“It is going to be tough, but we will soldier on and fight till the end. It is our hope that the people will surprise us,” he added.
Dr Jeyakumar’s opponents are Barisan’s S.K. Devamany, PKR’s S. Kesavan and PAS’ Dr Ishak Ibrahim.
