IPOH: Homemaker Wong Pik Mooi could not stop trembling even when she had to pose and smile for the camera.

As she grasped the mock voucher in her hand, the 55yearold had a hard time believing she had won the first prize in the Ipoh Starwalk Contest during the Ipoh Starwalk 2018.

“I can’t stop shaking!” she exclaimed to the photographers when she received the prize – a threeday, twonight stay at Tanjong Jara Resort in Terengganu worth RM5,000 and a Samsung Galaxy S9 worth RM3,299 courtesy of telecommunications company YES, which is part of the YTL Corporation.

Wong received the prize from YTL Digital Sdn Bhd chief operations officer Leong Chee Sung during a ceremony at Perak Turf Club, the official venue provider, yesterday.

She said she was at the back of the crowd when the emcee announced the first number for the contest prize, which no one came forward to claim.

But Wong got excited when the second number was announced as it matched hers.

Wong said she has been taking part in the walk for the last 10 years but never won a contest prize before.

“I used to come with my sons. Now they’re either outstation or busy studying, so I’m here alone for the first time,” said the mother of three.

Wong said she was looking forward to going on a holiday with her doctor husband.

“It’s been a long time since both of us went on a holiday together because we had to take care of the children.

“It’s also difficult for my husband to close his clinic for a long period because he has to attend to his patients,” she added.

As for the new smartphone, Wong said she would most likely give it to her husband, who is celebrating his birthday next month.

For secondplace winner Alison Esther Biam, 35, who also won a hotel stay and a smartphone, she said it was her luckiest event ever.

The interior designer said the threeday, twonight stay at YTL’s Tanjong Jara Resort was timely as she would be marking her 10th wedding anniversary on May 16.

She also won a Samsung Galaxy A7 sponsored by YES, which she planned to give to her husband as well.

“My husband’s smartphone was damaged a few days ago,” she said after collecting her prizes.

“This is one of my best wedding anniversary gifts. Now, I will need to plan with my husband on the best date to go for the holiday with our two children.”

Alison said this was her third time participating in Ipoh Starwalk.

The 15th edition of the annual event saw a record number of 15,600 participants taking part in the 7km walk.

Ipoh mayor Datuk Zamri Man, who flagged off the walk at 7am, congratulated Star Media Group for organising the event for the past 15 years.

“The event spurs economic growth for the city as many outstation participants will come to stay in hotels here, besides enjoying the food,” he said.

Also present were Perak Turf Club deputy chairman Datuk Cheah Choon King, Star Media Group advertising and business development deputy senior general manager Lydia Wang and group general manager regional operations (north) Simone Liong.

The walk was hosted by Star Media Group in cooperation with Ipoh City Council, Perak Athletic Association and Perak Education Department.

The official hotel was Weil Hotel. Platinum sponsor for the event was YES. The Gold sponsor was Indomie while the Silver sponsors were F&N, Sports Toto, Counterpain and Spritzer.
