PETALING JAYA: Food poisoning did not stop Odelia Wong Qiao Shi (pic) from smashing her way to two badminton titles in the 100Plus National Junior Circuit in the Zone C Melaka leg.

The Kuala Lumpur lass kept it simple to defend the girls’ Under-16 title by defeating homester Tan Yan Yi 21-15, 21-19 at Dewan Badminton Gan Hong Hoe yesterday.

She then powered her way to the girls’ Under-16 doubles title with Ong Kha Moon. The duo fended off a strong challenge from Adrienne Chan Yi Ning-Samantha Lee Harn Rou of Sarawak to prevail with a 21-12, 18-21, 21-13 win.

Odelia was surprised with her double success.

“I did not train for five days before the competition because of food poisoning. So, I did not set any targets,” said Odelia.

“My opponent (Yan Yi) made it easy for me. She was nervous but I played without any pressure.

“I must thank my partner Kha Moon for the victory in the doubles. We were given a tough fight but she stayed solid. I present this victory to Kha Moon because this is her last year in the Under-16 category,” added Odelia.

Kuala Lumpur made it a total of four titles in the four-day competition when Tan Jia Jie and Ting Wen Xuan emerged as the boys’ singles Under-16 and Under-14 champions respectively.

Jia Jie bagged his maiden title with a superb 21-19, 21-11 win over teammate Marcus Low Thong Zhi in 40 minutes for the Under-16 title while Wen Xuan knocked out Chong Jen Son of Johor with a 21-8, 21-11 win.

Melaka and Johor also bagged four titles each in Zone C.

Meanwhile, Sabah and Penang were the big winners in Zone A when they clinched six titles each at Likas Sports Complex in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, yesterday.
