SEKIJANG: With his square jawline and rather large frame, Tan Chong is testament to the notion that looks can be quite deceiving.

Behind this imposing physique is a demure, mild-mannered and friendly man, who has been tasked with regaining the Bekok state seat for Barisan Nasional in this polls.

“Please don’t just look at my appearance but hear me out first. The people here know me well as I have served in the Labis Municipal Council for 11 years.

“Throughout my tenure as a councillor, I have done my best to help resolve numerous problems affecting the local folk,” said the 53-year-old.

Tan said even when the issues were not within his job scope, he tried to connect the complainants to the relevant authorities.

To him, satisfaction in helping people from all walks of life was what matters most.

“My mobile phone is on 24/7. Anyone can call me directly if they need help, even during odd hours,” he said.

Tan said he hoped the voters would support him so that he could prove himself to them.

“Despite winning the seat in the last polls, the opposition rep could not do much for the people.

“On the contrary, MCA and I continue to be around and remain passionate about serving the people here,” he said.

Tan has drafted several plans for the next five years, including expanding the haemodialysis centre in Labis to treat more patients, building more affordable houses and upgrading the road from Bekok to Paloh.

The centre was set up in 2005 and Tan also visited and spent time finding out about the condition of the patients.
