‘Do not vote for me just for my looks!’
SEPANGGAR: Parti Warisan Sabah’s Sepanggar parliamentary candidate Datuk Azis Jamman has put out a special plea: “Do not vote for me just for my looks!”
The 44yearold dimpled one known for his oratory skills, stirred up the crowd at a ceramah on Monday night, saying that only those eager for change should back him.
“Don’t vote for me because I’m a Bajau, don’t vote for me because I’m a Muslim and don’t vote for me because people say I’m handsome,’’ said Aziz who is up against Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan and candidates from the Sabah Progressive Party and Parti Cinta Sabah.
Azis, who left Semporna Umno in 2016 to join Warisan which is led by former Cabinet minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, said the people should not support the small, localbased parties which he added had no chance of forming the state government.
“We have to choose a party that can strike out Umno and Barisan, meaning a party that contests more than 30 seats.
“Although Warisan has a seatsharing pact with Pakatan Harapan, Warisan is contesting 44 seats,” he said.
Political analyst Rahezzal Shah said Warisan’s move to put Azis, a Bajau from east coast Semporna in west coast Sepanggar, could suggest overconfidence on the party’s part.
“For Abdul Rahman, although he is parachuted from Kota Belud, he is still from the west coast,’’ Rahezzal added.
Sepanggar is a mixed area with migrants from all over the country settling there.
Located near state capital Kota Kinabalu, it is a mixed race seat with 62,415 voters of which 34,484 are Muslim bumiputra, 15,370 nonMuslim bumiputra, 11,847 Chinese, and 714 classified as others.
The constituency has two state seats, Inanam and Karambunai.
In 2013, Barisan won the Sepanggar and Karambunai seats but lost Inanam to PKR.
