Ahmad thanks supporters for helping PAS perform better
KOTA BARU: Overwhelming support from young and outstation voters is the reason why PAS managed to win 82% of state seats in Kelantan, said Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob.
Ahmad said the huge support helped PAS secure an additional five state seats.
“We would like to record our appreciation to the people of Kelantan who gave us the mandate to continue ruling Kelantan,” Ahmad told a press conference after he was sworn in as Mentri Besar for a second term before acting Kelantan Sultan, Tengku Dr Muhammad Faiz Petra.
PAS won 37 out of the 45 state seats and retained power for the seventh consecutive term on Wednesday,
Barisan Nasional won only eight state seats while PKR lost its sole Guchil state seat.
Ahmad said PAS secured more than 5,000 vote-majority in six seats, between 2,500 and 5,000 votemajority in 12 state seats, and less than 1,000 vote-majority in six seats.
“This shows an increase in support. This gives us the confidence to continue with Islamic governance and ulama leadership,” he said.
Ahmad said the dissatisfaction among Malaysians against Barisan had culminated in the tsunami that had forced a change in the Federal Government.
He added that Pakatan Harapan’s failure in winning any seats in Kelantan was not surprising.
“We expected it. Because the approach taken by Pakatan may be suitable for the west coast, but not the east coast,” he said.
The swearing-in ceremony of the Deputy Mentri Besar and the new state executive line-up would be held within a few days, said Ahmad.
