MCA: We respect the people’s decision
KUALA LUMPUR: MCA accepts the results of the 14th General Election and respects the people’s decision, says its president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic).
In a statement, he urged party members to stay united in the current political situation and face the challenges together.
“MCA will have a central committee meeting today.
“We will review the results of GE14 and its implications, set the future direction of MCA and strive to consolidate our structure in order to march forward,” he said.
Liow also thanked the voters for their support and the party machin- ery for their hard work in GE14.
In Raub, party vicepresident Datin Paduka
Chew Mei Fun said MCA must continue with its struggle and uphold its founding principles.
“As leaders, we cannot just leave like that even though the (election) results are not in our favour.
“I strongly believe that MCA is still relevant and has a role to play in society.
“Give us some time to sit down, reflect and think of a new path to bring it forward,” she said when contacted.
Chew added that since Raub voters had spoken, she would respect their decision and return to Kuala Lumpur for a short break.
“The intense campaigning for the past two weeks has drained me physically.
“I look forward to and hope the leaders of the new government will honour their pledges to the people,” she said.
Chew polled 17,500 votes against the 20,659 votes obtained by DAP’s Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji and lost the race for the parliamentary seat by a margin of 3,159 votes.
Her running mate Ng Leap Pong, who also lost in the constituency’s Tras state seat, said it was a “good experience” to contest in the elections for the first time.
“I thank the party for giving me this opportunity to enter the battlefield.
“I shall go back to running my business as life has to go on,” he said.
The Raub MCA Public Complaints and Services head lost to DAP’s Chow Yu Hui by 9,953 votes.
