KUALA PILAH: The country desperately needs leaders who are dignified, trustworthy and firm in their beliefs, says Negri Sembilan Ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

The Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan said any leader who abused his power or position would only cause injustices and failed policies.

“So, I would like to remind all assemblymen that the people have put their trust in you so that you will be able to voice their needs.

“Do not abuse this trust for self gain,” he said in his address at the swearing-in of Sikamat assemblyman Aminuddin Harun as Negri Sembilan’s new Mentri Besar.

Tuanku Muhriz also reminded all assemblymen that their loyalty should always be to the state and country.

“As assemblymen, you should execute your duties well and put aside your political or religious beliefs or skin colour.

“I hope you will also take part in all discussions, especially in the state assembly, which will be convened soon to ensure the people benefit from every policy,” he said.

The Ruler also reminded the police and armed forces personnel that their loyalty should be to King and country.

“The judiciary and enforcement agencies such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission must also be dedicated and just when carrying out their duties and not be biased to any party,” he said.

He also expressed hope the incoming government would continue the good work put in place by their predecessors.

Speaking to reporters later, Aminuddin acknowledged that the previous government had performed exceptionally.

He said his administration would continue with the policies that had benefited the people.

Aminuddin, 51, also pledged his administration would be honest and open.

“My government will be transparent and run with the highest level of integrity.

Also present were his wife Wan Hasni Wan Yusof and Pakatan assemblymen.

In the May 9 polls, Pakatan won 20 of the 36 state seats.

Aminuddin said his administration’s immediate task would be to fulfil its election pledges.

“We know the rakyat have pinned their hopes on us and that they will be observing what we do,” said Aminuddin, who was once an investigating officer with the then AntiCorruption Agency.

He said a think tank would also be set up to carry out research work, identify problems and propose measures to his administration to better serve the rakyat.

“We will work towards providing a more conducive living environ- ment, more job opportunities and will always welcome constructive proposals from anyone,” he said.

He added that state opposition members would also get some form of funding but this too had yet to be finalised.

He also reminded all politicians and members of his administration not to seek favours from him.

“I have always said that members of my administration would not be allowed to apply for even an inch of government land.

“And do not bring your proxies and ask me for favours,” he said.

KUALA KANGSAR: State Pakatan Harapan chairman Ahmad Faizal Azumu has been sworn in as the new Perak Mentri Besar, ending a four-day saga when both Pakatan and Barisan Nasional could not achieve a simple majority in the state assembly.

Ahmad Faizal, 48, took his oath of office in front of Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah during the swearing-in ceremony at around 6pm at Istana Iskandariah here yesterday.

In his address, Sultan Nazrin said Ahmad Faizal, together with 30 Perak assemblymen, had sought an audience with him to show proof that Pakatan had achieved a simple majority in the state assembly as at noon yesterday.

“I congratulate Ahmad Faizal for obtaining the majority of support from the state assemblymen in order to seek my consent and be entrusted with the responsibility of becoming Mentri Besar of my Government,” Sultan Nazrin said.

Sultan Nazrin also congratulated candidates from all political parties who had won the mandate from the voters.

“The rakyat have made their decisions in every constituency.

“Respect their decisions, appreciate the trust given by them and devote your time to serve them,” he added.

The Ruler also advised the elected representatives to listen to the people’s wishes and admit to their mistakes if they have committed any, and make amends.

Pakatan won 29 state assembly seats, while Barisan had 27 seats. PAS won three seats. Pakatan then managed to secure 31 seats to form the state government after two Barisan assemblymen defected to Pakatan.

Tualang Sekah assemblyman Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi and Sungai Manik assemblyman Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharuddin, both from Umno, last night confirmed that they offered their support to Pakatan to break the political stalemate. But they remain with Barisan.
