RMC wins award
TWO students from The Royal Military College (RMC) are the winners of the best science research poster presentation in the International Conference of Young Scientists (ICYS) held in Belgrade, Serbia.
Fourth formers Harris Shahrul Hisham and Warinthorn Charenrat Winai, who are both 16, presented the research on Gynura procumbens, a local plant traditionally used to control blood glucose levels. They were placed first in the Life Sciences category for their research poster presentation.
Warinthorn says they based their poster on the plant because it is an alternative medicine for diabetes, a serious non-communicable disease in Malaysia. Both won a medal and certificate each.
ICYS is an annual global platform, which brings together all aspiring and future scientists from secondary schools across the globe.
The competition on research and studies on physics, mathematics, life sciences and computer sciences is judged by an international jury panel. The 25th edition of the conference saw participation from 32 countries including eastern and western Europe, Scandinavian countries, Russia, the United States and others.
Selection and participation into the ICYS was coordinated by Malaysia Young Scientists Organisation, the body responsible to create a culture of being research-minded in Malaysian primary and secondary schools.
RMC mathematics teacher Muhammad Sanjay Paramarie, who was assigned to supervise the students and their research was delighted over the result.
“I am overwhelmed with the performance of the team. The two boys really made RMC proud,” he added.
The boys do not just concentrate on academic excellemce as Harris is a rugby captain and holds a black
belt in taekwondo while Warinthorn competes in basketball games at the national level.
