Sweet success, thanks to mum
Cupcake contest winner inspired by mother’s skills
IPOH: For Mothers Day, 13-year-old Ashley Cheang won a cupcake decorating contest, thanks to her mum.
Ashley said she was inspired by her mother’s cupcake decorating skills.
“My mum always bakes cakes and cupcakes when my grandmother and I celebrate our birthdays.
“I always pay attention when she decorates as it is interesting. I guess you could say I drew inspiration from her,” she said after winning the contest organised by the Weil Hotel here yesterday.
Ashley walked away with a food and beverage voucher worth RM100 from the hotel’s Tiffin Restaurant.
Six other children also joined the contest, which required the participants to finish decorating two cupcakes within 15 minutes.
Ashley’s mother Irene Wong, 44, said she felt touched by her daughter’s achievement.
“We saw a lot of nice creations from the other participants.
“I guided her through the process, but 90% of the design came from Ashley herself,” said the senior accountant.
The second-placed winner was four-year-old Abigail Yong who, according to her mother Chuah Joo Ngor, had a hidden talent for cupcake decoration.
“I have always noticed that Abigail has an artistic side because she likes drawing.
“Almost everything decorated on the cupcake was done by her. I only helped to squeeze out the cream,” said Chuah, 35.
Ten-year-old M. Logan, who took part with his younger brother Samugan, six, came in third.
Logan’s mother Dr K. Ganges, 35, who works as a lecturer, said her sons saw the cupcake decoration contest as a chance to explore their creativity.
“I bake whenever I can at home and Logan is always interested in helping out in the kitchen,” she said.
Abigail took home a voucher for a three-tier hi-tea set for two people at the hotel’s Tea Lounge, while Logan won a cash voucher worth RM50 from Bakery@Weil.
